Outer Banks Gas Pool Heater

Natural Gas and Propane Pool Heater on the Outer banks

Gas Pool Heater Sizing

If you are trying to heat a pool rather quickly then  a 400,000 btu pool heater is usually used for fast heating up of the pool (maybe 3 to 4 degrees an hour) . A smaller pool heater 200,000 btu can also heat a pool, it will just take longer (maybe 1 to 3 degrees in an hour). Using a  solar blanket cover can reduce the heat up time by a few minutes not allowing the heat to escape so easily  and have it ready for the moment when you choose to use it. A cold pool is defiantly not as inviting as a nice warm pool.

When sizing a pool heater you need to ask yourself a few questions about how you plan on using your Pool. If you will be heating intermittently by this i mean turning on the heater on Friday, and turning it back off on Monday, then a fast heating up is required. A typical gas pool heaters only add 1 – 2 degrees of pool heat per hour to the average pool. A larger heater like the 400,000 btu models would be better suited for this kind of pool heater use.

If you expect to be maintaining a temperature by setting the thermostat, and perhaps maybe adding a couple degrees in the evening or on weekends, then a smaller size pool heater can be used for this kind of pool heating.

We use this chart shown below as a guideline in sizing a heater to your actual pool size. Factor in the how you plan yo use your pool and other considerations such as temperature and wind from above and then consider going one size larger just for good measure.

Size Heater Gallons in Pool Sq. Ft. Surface Area of Pool
100,000 – 200,000 BTU heaters       1,000 galons to 10,000 gals up to 300 sq ft
